Sound Protection Toolbox

The Sound Protection Toolbox is intended as an aid for the approximate calculation and dimensioning of sound protection measures in mechanical systems. It provides a set of topics covering key aspects, as shown in the figure below.

Use for building certification

For building certification, this toolbox (or any other suitable software) can be used to assess whether sound pressure level requirements for the noise caused by the fan of the ventilation unit are met. It includes additional instructions, boundary conditions and a standardised calculation approach.

In many cases, detailed calculations are not required. If small ventilation units (capacity < 600 m³/h) are used and silencers are installed, the requirement is generally considered to be fulfilled. For large ventilation units, if silencers are missing, or if other potentially critical acoustic situations are present, a calculation is necessary. In this case, the calculation should at least be carried out for the ducts serving the most acoustically critical rooms (those closer to the ventilation unit, or those with lower acoustic attenuation).

For certified ventilation units measured sound emission spectra are documented in the test report. The test report is available from the manufacturer upon request.
