Crosswalks

With its various certification options, Passive House Institute offers pathways that ensure buildings can achieve the highest levels of energy efficiency in accordance with the Passive House or EnerPhit standard. Other certification procedures or instruments, such as green building standards, also aim to identify and recognise efficient buildings as such. For this reason, partnerships between the Passive House Institute and other certification bodies are a natural fit for pursuing this common goal.

To simplify any certification processes, Passive House Institute has established partnerships worldwide with institutions in the field of energy-efficient construction. The requirements of the Passive House Standard are integrated into other assessment procedures, and suitability for other green building standards is assessed. This creates compliance pathways whereby buildings that meet the Passive House Standard also qualify for the respective green building standard. It is therefore a matter of mutual recognition of the highest energy standards, where no compromises on sustainability need to be made.

The following list provides an overview of existing partnerships, known as ‘crosswalks’, between the Passive House Institute and other certification bodies. The Passive House Institute is committed to continually expanding this list. If you are aware of any sustainable building certification schemes with which we should consider establishing a partnership, or if you would like to initiate a collaboration yourself, please let us know by emailing info@passivehouse-international.org, using the keyword: Crosswalks.

The Green Building Council of Australia - Passive House Standard & Green Star – Design & As Built

The Green Star is a certification awarded by the Green Building Council Australia(GBCA) in collaboration with the Australian Passive House Association (APHA), and the Passive House Institute (PHI). Points are awarded in specific categories like emissions, comfort, air quality, innovation and peak electricity demand. By being a certified Passive House, a building automatically earns a set amount of points in all these categories. This crosswalk was established in 2017.

Homestar NZGBC

The New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) issues the Homestar rating that measures the health, warmth and efficiency of New Zealand houses. This document outlines processes, standards and expectations on an administrative and technical level and should be considered the default initial reference document for queries relating to the implementation of Homestar. The Passive House standard represents a comliance pathway with the presented measures and PHPP is recognised as a modelling tool for calculating the various factors taken into account.

International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) - Zero Energy & Passive House Certifications

This document addresses the International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) Zero Energy (ZE) certification and the Passive House certification of the Passive House Institute (PHI). The energy efficiency requirements of Passive House provide a targeted pathway focused on high energy efficiency for pursuing Zero Energy. The 12-month performance requirements of Zero Energy certification, in turn, provide a mechanism to validate the outcome of anticipated energy savings from Passive House.

U.S. Green Building Council - LEED v5 Rating System

In this document, Passive House certification is recognised as a means of demonstrating compliance. Calculations using the PHPP are also accepted here as a method for determining various factors. LEED states that crosswalks help project teams identify the features that align with strategies found in other rating systems like Passive House certification. They also enable projects seeking a dual rating to do so with greater ease and a more streamlined approach. The documents are categorised by content into 'Building Design and Construction' and 'Interior Design and Construction'.
