Thirty-five years ago, physicist Wolfgang Feist and his family built the world’s first Passive House in Darmstadt, Germany. In doing so, he laid the foundations for a remarkable global shift in construction and renovation in the early 1990s.
In 1996, Wolfgang Feist went on to found the Passive House Institute. In addition to the Passive House standard, the Institute developed the EnerPHIt standard for energy-efficient building renovations. Energy retrofits are crucial for a climate-friendly existing building stock. The EnerPHIt standard is based on the five principles of the Passive House standard.
